Formula Schools Race Day 2009 -
Motorsport Stars, Careers Village and over 800 Students at sun baked Silverstone
for the Formula Schools Race Day -
Schools arrived to a glorious sunny day at Silverstone for the grand finale event; the national Formula Schools Race Day. Over 80 teams, 800 students, travelled from all over the UK including 7 from Scotland and our first from Wales!
There was plenty to see, in addition to the live track action, the students worked on their cars in the pit lane garages and were joined by special guests Allan McNish (Driver) and Louise Goodman (ITV F1/BTCC commentator). Our team of judges were most impressed by the students work and commitment to the challenge; as it is every year, at Race Day 2009 the standard has been raised again by so many schools, fulfilling very high expectations within project management and delivery.
The Careers Village was packed with a fantastic range of displays, inspiring pupils and teachers about progression routes beyond their Formula Schools activity; promoting a connection between the students and industry. Enabling the students to engage with the main purpose of the day; to continue their interest in the fields of science, technology and engineering in both in education and employment. Displays included the Royal Navy’s Helicopter Simulator, an Audi R8 Le Mans Car, BLOODHOUND SSC, Oxford Brookes University, Lunar Racing, TechSoft, RWE npower, Didcot Power Station and a fantastic display from Go Motorsport who brought cars from; Williams F1, Santa Pod and Ginetta.
The support from industry and education made for a marvellous event. It was another classic Formula Schools Race Day with adrenalin on and off the track fuelling the day. As ever the final champions were battling it out right down to the last moments of the Grand Prix finals.
With many schools already signing up for next year, and positive feedback from both pupils and staff, who tell us this year was a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable event, we very much hope the challenge is able to continue.
Thank you to all staff and students for your critical role which propels the continued success of the challenge. Furthermore, the support from our industry and education partners is vital as together we continue to encourage the engineers of the future to come forward.
